Impact of Biotech in Brazil

Picturesque Pernambuco, Brazil Has Interesting Investment Profile

Pernambuco is a Brazilian state located in the northeast of the country. According to last year's statistics by the IBGE, the population of the state stood at about 8,745,000 residents with a population density of 89.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The state has an urbanization rate of 76.8% and a population growth rate of 1.2%. There are about 187 kilometers of pristine beaches on its Atlantic coastline, some being the most beautiful in the country and crucial in increasing tourism in the region.  Its capital, Recife, is considered one of the most beautiful urban centers in Brazil with its beautiful Boa Viagem urban area.

The economy of the state is primarily based on Agriculture, animal husbandry and related industries. About 90% of Brazilian sugar output coming from the region. It only comes second after Sao Paulo in sugar cane production. The state's economy has been growing rapidly and as at the year 2000, its GDP per capita was Rs3.673 that gave a resultant 40% growth. From the 2007 figures, its GDP per capita stands at Rs7.337. The biggest industries in the state are food production, chemistry, pharmaceutical, textile, electric materials, communication, metallurgy, non-metallic minerals and tourism.  Suape, its biggest industrial and port city had a 16.7% growth giving Pernambuco the second biggest industrial growth in Brazil of 6.3%, a figure twice the National average (2.3%, in 2006).

Porto digital, an informatics center in its capital Recife, is amongst the biggest five in Brazil with thousands of employment opportunities created and an overall contribution of 3.5% to the GDP of Pernambuco. The Brazilian National Association of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (Anprotec) distinguished the digital port as the best Brazilian Technological Park in 2007.  Since 2005, Pernambuco has received both large and small investments in the public and private sector particularly due to the Suape port, general logistics, the government's strategy of decentralization in investments and its strategic geographical location. Investments are aplenty such as the Abreu Lima Refinery that is owned by Petrobas and PDVSA, Atlantico Sul Ship builder, the largest on the south Atlantic ocean with investments worth US$1.2 billion, Petrochemical pole with three integrated companies having a total value of US$2.3 billion in investments, the Goiana industrial plants of Novartis and Hemobras pharmo-chemical at about US$700 million etc.

Grupo TCI based in state is Brazil's premier technological research and innovation firm and arguably the best in the world for discovering new medicines. More than US$10 billion in investments are expected in the region by end of 2010.
