why is it advised to wear a swim suit over another in competive swimming?

i have been told by a few people that once your swimsuit begins to tear you wear onother one over it. i aleays wondered what excatly is the point of this. Muchos Gracias :p

I have been swimming my whole life. When you are swimming in a competition, you only wear one suit, and you only wear that suit for competitions, the less you wear it the longer you can use it.
As far as wearing two or more suits, swimmers do that during practice because it creates more drag. It helps swimmers work harder because there is more cloth on the body absorbing and catching water. Having to swim practices with drag on and then swimming in a meet with one suit on, it makes you feel lighter and more streamline. It is kind of like why some guys shave their legs and arms, to be more streamline.
