Green Ambassadors New World Leaders in Training
Visiting the Green Ambassadors new facilities in Lawndale, California I noticed right away this program is driving Environmental Charter High School to be like no other. Maybe it was the compost corner and vegetable garden, or where they convert vegetables into biodiesel. Or the First Place award-winning 'Floatation Machine' made out 100% recycled products. Either way, this school is unique. I am at the home of The Green Ambassadors (Green Ambassadors website), which is an educational program from the Environmental Charter High School.
Sara Laimon, the magnetic Founder of Green Ambassadors gave me a tour of their new facilities of ECHS and Green Ambassadors, while still in the remodeling and upgrading phase. As the school is moving out of boxes, and organizing their new classrooms she explained the sustainable plans in store for this unique Environmental Charter High School. There is an air of excitement. As I peaked into the classrooms, students were busy with various projects. These students know they are making a difference in our world for generations to come. The Green Ambassador Program is comprised of an elective class taught throughout schools in Los Angeles area, Youth Summits, Green Mobile Embassy, Green Adventures and supported by Green Mentors.
This groundbreaking organization is beginning to explode. The green element of the program is so strong that even during our interview she was selling organic soda to students from her office. In fact we were surrounded by green solutions, hangers made from wheat, recycled binders made from paper, Forest Certified pencils, even donated environmentally friendly, bio-degradable diapers are stacked on her desk in the office she shares with her green partners. “This program is created to breakdown our cultural social paradigms and educate all. Especially the communities that suffer the most from environmental injustices, the inner city, who normally miss the green education on how to advocate for a clean, healthy environment.” Laimon.
Green Ambassadors, a project of Environmental Charter High School, is an environmental education program that empowers youth to become agents of change in their communities and the world. The goals of the program include: Educating and motivating youth, inspiring them to set a "Green" example through open idea exchange and social action; To create a learning environment that will inspire new thought, helping young people to develop confidence in themselves and their future; To network communities, share ideas and empower local and global environmental solutions; To create "Green Ambassadors" for local communities and the world, inspiring hope within us all for a just, sustainable and peaceful planet.
I asked Sara what’s the future you see for the Green Ambassadors?
With certainty she said, "For all schools to have Green Ambassadors around the world. Who are agents of change and the voice of the environment."
The Green Ambassador elective class at Environmental Charter High School is a required course for every student to take in their 10th grade year where students receive college credit from Los Angeles Trade Technical College. The Green Ambassadors have already been accomplishing their mission through their trainings in initiatives. These initiatives are implemented by youth who are committed to fulfilling Green Ambassadors mission, vision, values, and goals. The Green Ambassador program provides a different way of learning for youth who want to contribute to this planet.
They have been trained in the One Billion Bulbs Youth empowering youth to imagine the possibilities. With a goal of mobilizing the world to replace one billion standard incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs. Plastics are Forever is another initiative where youth empowering youth to create cleaner oceans by banning plastic bags and Styrofoam (polystyrene) in Los Angeles with Algalita Marine Research Foundation, Bring Your Own, Heal the Bay and other non-profits. Green Ambassadors are trained in Biofuels, Organics, Biodiversity, Remediation of our soil, and constructing buildings and structures out of earth friendly materials.
'Floatation Machine' made of all recycled products
"Sara Laimon has been a positive light within the sustainability movement for the past ten years. During her career as a classroom teacher, she has guided classes and school groups to create cob benches, convert a diesel car to run on veggie oil, create bio-diesel, and eat organic. Sara has traveled to Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Haiti, Greece, and Galapagos finding, sharing, and learning solutions. She is devoting her life to creating and nurturing eco-activists to be empowered to share the solutions of hope."
Green Ambassadors currently has two teachers. They are unique in that they are well versed in Environmental Studies. "They approached me with a huge desire for a huge change." Sara shared with me. The names of these incredible teachers are Sandra Valencia who is originally from Colombia, she has taught High School Spanish for the past five years at ECHS and Dorsey High School (LAUSD). She has been an environmental activist for the past five years working with the Los Angeles Biodiesel Coalition, Dorsey High School's club Global Warriors. Gabriel Azenna, who's statement is "Green' isn't merely a color… but it's a state of mind". He adheres to a pragmatic acceptance that human beings may continue to prosper, but only by recognizing and embracing our integral duty as planetary stewards. Beyond the classroom, Gabriel is the Environmental Education Director for Next Aid, a non-profit organization his wife Lauren, co-founded in 2002. Gabriel also sits on the steering committee for the Coalition for a Sustainable Africa; a consensus-based network of NGO's all dedicated to sustainable development projects on the ground in Africa.
Sara believes that the passion behind the people that contribute to our program stems from a satisfaction that they are investing into youth, that they see what they are doing is bigger than themselves and they contributing to the environment at the same time.
I was also interested in the ethnic backgrounds of The Green Ambassadors.
She explained they started with inner city children, but understand and promote that there is one world and we are the human race working together to create a planet where everyone can live. Therefore we have 'Youth Summit’ where youth crossing gender, race, and social barriers and are collaborating as youth across the city and nation to inspire, create, and share solutions for a healthy planet."
“We are tired of the myths about inner-city kids and their apathy towards the environment!” What is unique about our Los Angeles Youth Leadership Clinic is that it is youth-planned, youth- driven and youth-motivated. Youth are driven to improve their local environment."
Spelled out clearly on their website; “Young adults are creating their own stewardship model by teaching each other, pooling their resources, strengthening their community vision and inspiring people to change. Youth need to see that they are an influential and vital part of the community. The youth of Los Angeles are the next generation of leaders. If they are not included in the community when they are young, they may not stay in the community to be the leaders of the future. These thoughts were recently expressed by Sabina Ibarra, a youth participant in the leadership clinic, Green Ambassadors, and a student at Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale, CA."
In asking how Green Ambassadors improved their your local community? Sara reflects how they have demonstrated training for bio-diesel technology, community battery recycling, training local elementary schools on how to recycle plastics, to be a first in promoting city council 'ban plastic in our community', Awareness Day, and Earth Day to name just a few. They also are responsible for Southern California Disposal to switch their fleets of dirty diesel to run on clean burning biodiesel.
"Our strategy through all of our programs is to provide experiences for the Green Ambassadors to acquire knowledge and develop the skills that will not only help them in this program, but also provide them with real-world skills for personal, academic, and professional success. The students take the issue, research and develop solutions, and socially market the solution to their peers and the community at-large."
The Future
They have not stopped there. Green Adventures are cross cultural global exchanges. After a successful field experience to Brazil in April 2007 with Earthwatch Education, and educating the schools there, they have taken on a new horizon: Columbia. They are currently holding a fundraiser, 'Support 10 students with the Green Adventure Program' as they create Green Ambassador Leaders in Medellin, Columbia. Medellin has created several programs that aim to bring peace and environmental action through education. To find out more contact Sandra Valencia sandra_valencia@echonline.org or Sara Laimon at 310.214.3400 ext 118. Visit
(http://www.greenambassadors.org/initiatives.php#Green_Mentors)
They believe that ' youth identify an issue, develop a solution, act to bring about the solution, and educate others. The most important part is that young people are becoming empowered to make a difference and are, in turn, empowering other young people. This leads to a community that has youth that are knowledge, active, and know how to make a difference.'
Sara Laimon explained what their Mobile Embassy will incorporate. It will feature a multi-media station and hands-on learning stations on the following topics; plastics, bio-diesel, bio-plastic, solar power, and organic foods. It will be used as the showcase for Green Ambassador to meet, share, and exemplify solutions for our Global Climate Crisis.
With expert assistance from Algalita Marine Research Foundation, Bring Your Own, and a grant from Patagonia, the Ambassadors will transform a trailer into a Green Mobile Embassy (GME), a vessel housing models of green solutions. The Mobile Embassy will serve to teach students from throughout the region about the issues and how they can help to alleviate the environmental problems." As their site reflects. Jack Assadourian, owner of the Ha-Ha Cafe Comedy Club in North Hollywood (www.hahacafe.com) also donated two school buses that will be converted into biodiesel transportation for the Green Ambassadors.
Green Mentors
"The Green Ambassadors program also identifies and enlists 'Green Mentors' who are of college age or above. These Mentors work with the Green Ambassadors to support them in their learning of environmental issues as well as solutions to these issues. Green mentors are benefited by developing their interpersonal skills (empowerment, networking, and enrollment), knowledge (environmental and scientific), and ecological values (biodiversity and interconnectedness). Green Mentors assist the Green Ambassadors to focus on specific issues where students can create social awareness and measurable change."

The Green Ambassadors left me with an experience of what is right with the world. No matter what your opinions are on the environment, the fact remains they are cutting back on waste. These students, instead of worrying about the plights of inner city school problems, such as gang violence; they are creating an environment for themselves today, for their future that will effect generations to come. Not only are they making a difference for their school, families, and communities, but they are spreading the technology on HOW to be green to schools across the city, states, and now countries.
I left the school inspired, and honored that these incredible teenagers are working on change for my future, and my children’s future.
Let's start off 2008 powerfully, and create "Green Ambassadors" for all communities inspiring hope for a just, sustainable and peaceful planet.

Flight News On Light Business Jets For Private Charter & ACMI Lease
The concept of the Very Light Jet (VLJ) held great promise; it was to be the era of the personal jet and every general aviation (GA) pilot was to have the opportunity of mixing it with the "big boys" at high altitude.
Inevitably there were questions of training, proficiency, production and insurance, though these were all considered to be capable of solution. Unfortunately, there was another factor-economics. Many of the start-ups foundered; reality began to be recognized and a more realistic approach has been introduced.
Some promising contenders fell by the wayside including ATG Javelin, Epic Jet, Eviation Vantage (nee Visionarie Vantage), Excel-Jet, Sport-Jet, Safire, Spectrum33, and Adam700. Perhaps not all totally lost as some builders still try to bring their design to fruition.
Even the term VLJ has given way to "Light Jets" or "Entry Level Jets," though this widens the class in terms of size to include a greater range of types. What had been termed by some as a revolution is now maturing as a more conservative evolution.
It is also taking place at a time of considerable financial turbulence. Over the last three years the market for aviation has been less than good, though the tide is now turning. To introduce a cautionary note, reference must be made to a recent forecast from the US-based Forecast International that suggests that a total of 11437 business jets, worth an estimated $217, 15-billion, will be produced from 2011 to 2019.
Meanwhile, the downturn has impacted the light and mid-size business jet sectors far more than it has the large-cabin and long-range segments of the market. Although production rates of all types of business jets have been slashed since late 2008, the cutbacks have been much deeper for light and medium jets. Demand is already starting to recover for larger, high-value business jets, but it remains moribund for small and medium models.
Now that VLJs have morphed into the light jets class they join a wider range of aircraft ,passing through the Citation models,Learjets, Beech Jet 400As and Hawker 400XP.However,the Citation Mustang and Embrear Phenom 100 represent the early VLJs and are proving to be a commercial success, having established market acceptance and created new, low cost, personal transportation.
At the lighter end of the "light" spectrum some of the old spirit still remains.
Eclipse Aviation had been an early contender and had been more than usually optimistic about future prospects for its Eclipse 500. This is a neat twin-engine aircraft offering six seats, a maximum cruising speed of 370 knots and range of 1125 nautical miles.
The company went bankrupt in 2009 though the new owners intend to re-launch the project. Currently located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Eclipse Aerospace provided engineering, service, and support for the fleet of 260 Eclipse 500 twin-engine jets.
This ambition received a significant boost, last October, when Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. and Eclipse Aerospace, Inc. announced an agreement in principle for Sikorsky to make an investment in Eclipse Aerospace Inc.
During the first 13 months of profitable operation, Eclipse Aerospace has made significant strides with continued upgrades to current Eclipse twin-engine jet aircraft in features and operational capabilities .In addition, Eclipse Aerospace has continued to re-brand its global supply chain and cultivate the existing and growing customer base.
During the recent Middle East Business Aviation Show (MEBA), in Dubai, Kim Alptekin, executive vice president of Eclipse Aerospace, was bullish about prospects in the Middle East, an area generally considered to be only interested in long-range business jets.Alptekin suggests that the aero plane is ideal for the area, with its ability to make short trips that would take several hours by car.
Meanwhile, there are other contestants currently undergoing flight testing-Cirrus Vision SF50,Diamond D-Jet, Honda HA-420 Honda Jet and Piper Jet.
Cirrus Vision
Cirrus has been actively demonstrating its flight test aircraft as well as displaying its full size mock-up to prospective customers. Most recently, the company has been optimizing engine pitch-thrust coupling.
Cirrus has flight tested several different nozzle configurations to optimize handling characteristics. Following trials the result is the EXACT nozzle that is a proprietary and innovative design by Williams that uses the Coanda effect to result in a varying thrust with no moving parts. The thrust is more vectored at low altitudes to provide improved low speed handling and is straighter at high altitude to provide better cruise performance.
The jet will be fitted with an emergency Cirrus airframe parachute system(CAPS) of 27,2 metre diameter when fully deployed and simulated development trials using computer techniques is currently underway.
Diamond D-Jet
Diamond Aircraft has also had its share of economic difficulties including the insolvency of its piston engine supplier. This economic knock-on effect has impacted the schedule for the D-Jet, though the company emphasizes that there have been significant benefits associated with this.
The new Williams FJ33-5A turbofan makes the Garmin 1000-equipped D-Jet a better aero plane and significant progress has been made in all areas, as well as in the production infrastructure and certification.
HONDAJET
Many analysts predict that the Honda Jet will be as commercially successful as the Mustang and Phenom 100. Its gestation has taken some time, but at last years NBAA the Honda Aircraft Company, Inc released an update to its Honda Jet advanced light jet programme, including the announcement of ground testing underway on its first conforming aircraft.
Also announced was the commencement of assembly of its third conforming flight test aircraft.
The first flight of theFAA-conforming Honda Jet took place in late December 2010.The event is a significant step in Hondas aerospace programme leading to delivery of aircraft in 2012. The flight lasted 51 minutes, characteristics and performance were analysed and systems checks were conducted. Various test data gathered during the flight were transmitted real-time to Hondas flight test telemetry operations base within the company's world headquarters facility.
Systems tests already completed on the conforming aircraft includes, among others: oxygen, fuel tank and vapour cycle systems tests; landing gear deployment tests; steering and brake tests; flight control tests; power distribution tests; core navigation functions (VOR/ILS/GPS) tests; primary air data and attitude/heading sensor tests; and integrated avionic system functional tests.
Additional tests completed at supplier facilities include: DC motor pump extreme environmental condition tests; hydraulic and electrical component tests; landing gear actuator vibration tests; landing gear drop tests; and crew and cabin seat crash tests.
Exterior treatment of the first conforming flight test aircraft also is complete with the application of a new Honda Jet paint scheme. It features a metallic silver-over-white profile combined with a distinctive sweeping fuselage stripe in dark metallic gray.
Assembly of the second conforming aircraft, to be used for static structural stress testing, was completed last July .Following control surfaces FAA testing, including rudder and elevator tests, static structural stress tests of the entire aircraft have commenced and included: 100% limit-load wing tests; 100% limit-load horizontal stabilizer tests; wing stiffness tests; landing gear load tests; pylon stiffness tests and fuselage pressure tests.
All static structural stress tests are conducted using Hondas advanced structural test system. The system incorporates 61 hydraulic actuators and a 2600-channel data acquisition system within a structural test fixture designed exclusively for Honda Jet testing. The entire aircraft can be tested simultaneously to prove static and fatigue strength under various flight-and ground-load conditions.
Testing will continue on static test aircraft as the Honda jet programme moves through the certification process. The fourth conforming aircraft will be used for fatigue testing scheduled for 2012 .Honda is now focused on the third conforming aircraft to be used fore flight testing of mechanical systems.
Testing of aircraft systems on conforming flight test aircraft are supported through the implementation of Hondas industry-leading Advanced Systems Integration Test Facility (ASITF). Hondas ASITF confirms before first flight the integration of the aircrafts electrical, vionics, mechanical and flight control systems, including stall warning protection systems (SWPS) and rudder bias systems (RBS).The Honda Jet ASITF incorporates a fully representative primary flight control system with a high-fidelity control-loading system.
Honda also released Honda Jet production cockpit and cabin designs featuring production parts, reflecting the quality of materials, colours and finishes to be available in delivery aircraft. The Honda Jets cockpit design has been updated to reflect the maturity of Hondas human factors engineering efforts and flight test evaluations.
Construction of the Honda Jet production facility on thecompanys Greensboro campus is nearing completion. The 23225 square metre production facility is now in the final phase of construction, with interior build-out well underway. The facility is scheduled for completion in early 2011, at which time pre-production preparations and training of production staff will begin.
Upon completion, the production facility's two state-of-the –art painting facilities will be used to support finishing of additional conforming aircraft, thereby supplementing the painting capacity of Hondas R&D facility on campus. In addition, the Honda Jet production facility will incorporate Flight Safety International Level-D, full –motion flight simulators for training of all Honda Jet pilots and crew.
Pipers Jet
What was originally called the Piper Jet first flew in July 2008. It was always a basic intention of the design that the aircraft was scalable and capable of a great deal of future growth development.
Consequently, it was not too surprising that in October 2010, Piper announced a much larger round fuselage design that gives customers and even more spacious cabin to complement already efficient acquisition and operating costs.
The single-pilot Piper Jet Altaire, as it has been renamed, was unveiled at the recent NBAA convention.
"While the earlier Piper Jet design ,with its Piper M-class cabin cross section, provided a comfortable environment ,we wanted to give our jet customers an even roomier light jet that incorporates a scalable design paving the way for a future family of competitive business jets," said Piper CEO, Geoffrey Berger.
The Altaire features a new configuration .Its larger redesigned round fuselage is mounted on top of an expanded-chord wing, with a shorter vertical empennage located slightly aft a top an elongated engine nacelle.
"The PiperJet Altaire is a powerful and stylish blend of efficiency, cabin volume, range, payload and speed, "Berger said. Price point for the Piper Jet Altaire is $ 2, 5-million, with a typical equipped aircraft priced at $2, 6-million. The Piper Jet Altaire costs an average of 25% less to operate per hour than comparable production very light jets.
The round fuselage and new wing provide all the performance and cabin improvements of a clean sheet aircraft coupled with the proven reliability of Pipers manufacturing techniques honed with the company's line-up, including M-class aircraft-the Meridian, Malibu and Matrix.
In addition to cleaner and sleeker styling, the optimized configuration gives customers a cabin that is nine inches taller and four inches wider than the previous design. The new cross section also offers a wider than standard sunken aisle for ease of movement inside the cabin.
Additionally, the Piper Jet Altaire will have a near one-metre wide cabin door for ease of passenger entry and exit while providing great cargo flexibility.
Meanwhile, the baseline proof of concept Piper jet has flown more than 375 flight test hours and carried out more than 350 takeoffs and landings.
The Piper Jet Altaire will have dynamic crew and passenger seats for increased safety and comfort, with club seating in the cabin with an optional seventh seat located across the aisle from the entry door. A lavatory, storage compartment, or entertainment centre is easily interchangeable for that seat.
With a wide dropdown aisle, no wing spar intrusion, LED lighting and dual controlled environmental system, the interior has been styled for superior passenger comfort.
Maximum range is targeted at 1300 nautical mile with a maximum cruise speed planned at 360 knots .The aero plane is planned to fly 1200 nautical miles with a payload of 363 kilograms.
Currently undergoing CAD modeling and analysis in the programmes detail design phase, the first of four conforming Piper Jet Altaire flight test aircraft will begin flying in 2012.Certification and first customer deliveries are planned for 2014, slightly after the previously scheduled date.
The flight deck features Garmin G3000 avionics complete with the first touch screen-controlled glass panel designed for light turbine aircraft, three displays, two touch screens and a GFC 700 automatic flight control system.
Piper has selected the L-3 Avionics Systems Trilogy ESI-2000 electronic standby instrument, with battery backup, as standard equipment.
Flight controls will be yokes, replacing the side stick controls flown on the Piper Jet proof of concept test article. The improved aircraft will also have crew seats that are easier to access and an ergo-dynamic interface between pilot and avionics.
Epic Victory
Epic Aircraft, designer of the Epic Victory, went into bankruptcy in 2009 and its assets were bought, in April 2010, by Aviation Industry Corporation, of China, with the declared intention of restarting production and certification.
The Victory is a single-engine very light jet of carbon fibre construction, powered by a single Williams FJ33 engine for testing, but originally planned to switch to the PW600 for final production. The aircraft can accommodate four to five, including the pilot.
The first flight was made on July 6, 2007, and the company intended that the aircraft would be available for less than us$1-million: this has now crept up to us$ 1; 5-million.It is available in kit form and would be registered in the Experimental category.
Sport Jet
By March 2009, the Excel Jet Incorporated's Sport-Jet 11 was at an advanced stage of construction. It is interesting to note that the wing is constructed using a CNC-milled spar and hydro formed ribs giving the wing extremely tight tolerances from root to tip.
The programme suffered an unfortunate setback when wake turbulence downed the Proof of Concept (POC) Sport-Jet, fortunately without serious injury to the crew.
The company prefers to call this a PLJ-Personal Light Jet – and it has been designed to suit the needs and experience of GA pilots rather than professional pilots.
Mustang And Phenom 100
Meanwhile, the Cessna Citation Mustang and Embraer Phenom 100 are making steady commercial progress and helping to establish a low cost sector in the executive aviation market.
The Citation Mustang is beginning to demonstrate a useful versatility. During 2010, Cessna delivered five Mustangs to Singapore Airlines for its pilot training programme. In July 2010, Cessna teamed with Spectrum Aeromed to offer medical evacuation system for the Mustang. The first version is now in service.
Cessna has also announced a new High Sierra Edition Mustang featuring luxury editions of the three currently offered interiors, a special paint scheme, a Garmin G1000 with synthetic vision technology, electronic charts and locking fuel caps as well as unique service and parts programmes.
Cessna delivered its 300th Mustang in mid-2010.The Mustang is certificated in more than 60 countries.
Brazilian manufacturer Embrears Phenom 100 can accommodate up to eight occupants and has seven different interior options designed in partnership with BMW Group DesignworksUSA.
Its range of 1170 nautical miles, including NBAA IFR fuel reserves, means the aircraft is capable of flying non-stop from New York to Miami, in the US, from London to Rome, in Europe, or from Brisbane to Melbourne, in Australia.
The Jet was certificated in December 2008 and has proved to be the fastest and to have the largest baggage capacity in its category.
In August 2010, the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (Agencia Nacional de Aviacao Civil-ANAC), the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certificated the use of Garmin's Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) on the aero plane.
Recently, Embrear has been working on providing spoilers for the Phenom 100. These are situated on the upper, inboard section of each wing.
In a statement to World Air news, Embraer confirmed that it had identified an existing demand for ground spoilers on the Phenom 100 and had decided to meet it by developing an exclusive ground spoiler system for the aero plane.
"The device is an optional item and will be initially offered only via service bulletin for retrofit. Even though the ground spoilers have a positive impact on the aero planes landing capability, Embraer will not take credit for such improvement in the certificated performance numbers.
Service bulletins will be available early this year at Embraers service centre network," the company said.
A major benefit of spoilers is their ability to rapidly transfer the aircraft weight on to the wheels after touchdown, to generate optimum braking.
Emivest Aerospace Corporation was formed in June 2008 when Emirates Investment and Development Company PSC (Emivest) acquired an 80% interest in US based aircraft manufacturing company, Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation (SSAC) which developed the SJ30, said to be the worlds fastest, longest range and highest flying light jet.
The SJ30 is the first aircraft of its kind in the business jet segment to retain sea level cabin pressure at 41000 feet and reach a top flying height of 49000 feet.
Sadly expectations could not whether the economic realities and , in October 2010, Emivest Aerospace Corp filed for bankruptcy ,hurt by a lack of working capital and lower demand for business jets due to the economic downturn.
Hawker 400XP
Another sign that the light jet class has a long path to full economic recovery was during its third-quarter earnings conference, in November, when Hawker Beech craft announced that it would suspend production of its Hawker 400XP for two years.
Chairman Bill Boisture commented that company planned to "temporarily suspend production of the Hawker 400XP in 2011 to realign supply with demand. Current expectation is that we will resume production of the Hawker 400XP in early2013."
Optimistic Note
Despite these setbacks it is still possible to finish this review on an optimistic note.
A couple of years ago, US-based Stratos Aircraft announced its intention to build a four-seat aircraft that would be unlike any currently available or announced to the market.
Named the Stratos 714, it will have the capability to carry four people and their baggage 1500 nautical miles at a speed of 400 knots, at up to Flight Level 410.
It sounded optimistic, even brave, but recently the company offered an update .The Stratos engineering team has done its homework before creating this clean sheet design.
The team members were able to profit from costly mistakes made by others in shaping earlier VLJ design concepts that either had to be reconfigured or simply disappeared.
Their four-seat Very Light Personal Jet (VLPJ) makes a lot of sense in the American market and evolving markets in Europe, Russia and China.
Research concluded that most flights in twin jet aircraft average 1000 miles and carry only 2, 5 passengers. Consequently, the four seats in the Stratos 714 will accomplish the same mission profile with considerably more room and comfort than the larger jets and at a significantly lower cost.
People over 6'5" are surprised to learn that they can occupy any seat with plenty of legroom and headroom.
Carbon composite construction and other leading edge materials are being employed to reduce cabin noise levels. A variety of options for cabin entertainment and passenger comfort are also available.
The side-stick control, state-of-the-art glass cockpit and fully integrated autopilot, are designed to lighten the pilots workload.
Landing speeds and distance requirements for the Stratos are considerably below other twin-jets, making many more airports accessible to Stratos owner/pilots.
Stratos Aircraft is now accepting deposits on 714 delivery positions. Deposit money is escrowed in interest-bearing accounts and can be retrieved at any time. The company is seeking investors and though capital is tight, it expects to have two flying prototypes within the next two years.
Perhaps it is all a case of: The VLJ is dead-long living the VLJ!

Summer Customs in Japan
Japanese summers are usually introduced by a warm, sunny spring season, but this year, the temperatures and conditions have been wildly erratic. However, ‘Tsuyu' (the rainy season) has arrived on schedule as usual, bringing with it the typical heat and humidity that can be expected at this time of the year, and the realization that summer has arrived.
Summer is an exciting time, with summer festivals, fireworks, traditional customs, special sporting events and summer holidays. In Japan, the main traditional customs include ‘Chugen' (the giving of a mid-year gift to relatives, or to a company boss or colleague), ‘Obon' (a Buddhist event, and a time to remember one's ancestors and honor their spirits), and ‘Suikawari', a traditional game for children in which one child is blindfolded, and tries to cut or break a watermelon with a stick or pole. Many Japanese people will travel at this time to be with their families, and the highways can be clogged with traffic before and after ‘Obon', which generally occurs around the middle of August.
It is a very active season, and all across Japan, those who have holidays will travel and participate in various activities to make their vacation enjoyable or memorable. Some will attempt to climb Fuji-san, a yearly pilgrimage for many Japanese people. Others will go to Koushien stadium in Osaka and watch the annual high school baseball championship. Many participate in or line up to see the famous festivals that occur during this time, with almost every town and city having their own local event. Typically, at then end of each of these events is a great fireworks show.
Some of the more famous summer ‘Matsuri' or festivals include the Nebuta Matsuri in Aomori, near the top of Honshu, the Akita-Kanto Matsuri, the Narita Gion Matsuri, the Sanno Matsuri in Tokyo, the Gujo Bon Odori festival in Gifu, the spectacular Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka, the Awa Odori festival in Tokushima, and the Hakata Gion Matsuri in Fukuoka on Kyushu, but these are just to name a few of the more well known festivals.
In most local neighborhoods, one can smell the wonderful scent of burning wood as families fire up their barbecues. It is a time for eating one's favorite foods, relaxing, and swimming. The local beaches, rivers and swimming pools are full of people looking for a cool respite from the summer heat. Nagashima Spaland in Mie Prefecture is a popular water-amusement-park in summer, as is Tokyo's Summerland, and Hokkaido's Super Jumbo Pool. Japan even had the world's largest indoor beach until it closed in 2007.
Humidity levels are extremely high during summer, and many people opt to stay inside and fan themselves to stay cool. In fact, on the old Japanese calendar, July was known as ‘Fumizuki' (literally ‘book month'), as it was a good time to stay indoors and read. Other indoor activities include calligraphy, ‘haiku', tea ceremony, and ‘Ikebana', the Japanese art of flower arranging. Natural clothes' dyeing with flowers is also a popular pastime.
Last summer, my wife Mandy and I had the rare chance to learn and participate in both natural clothes' dyeing and ‘Ikebana'! Flower-dyeing and flower arrangement is not really my thing, but I'm also not one to turn down an opportunity, so I decided to try it.
Over the years here we have eaten Japanese food, studied the language, read the history and literature, listened to (and sung) Japanese music, and even learned karate in a Japanese dojo. We have climbed Fuji-san, been to baseball games, and we even went to a live Sumo match and watched the "rikishi" (wrestlers), still wearing their hair in the samurai top knot, fight it out in the ring! We have participated in a tea ceremony, danced in the Bon Odori, and enjoyed countless summer festivals, but we still hadn't experienced "Japanese Flower Arrangement", and hence we were both really looking forward to it.
So Mandy and I took a train to Kuwana, in Mie, to meet our Japanese friend, Yuko, and together we had a traditional Japanese "brunch" - rice, miso soup, sushi and Japanese tea!
Then she drove us up into the mountains, where for 3 days a season, people can try their hand at natural clothes dyeing. We were the only ones there, and had the full attention of the instructing ladies! Now for me, this felt like a feminine pursuit (I'm not being sexist, but how many men do you know of, who pick flowers and do natural clothes dyeing?). However, for the sake of being able to make and take home something nice for my mother at Christmas, I decided to not just watch my wife, but to get in and get my hands dirty, so to speak. I was dyeing in there! I wanted to dye!
So we chose flowers (marigold, for the yellow dye), and some leaves of purple-looking plants (for Indigo dye), to make the dye. They were simply put in a pot and boiled, until the color came out, and then the flowers were removed. As we waited for the water to cool, we chose our cloth. Mandy and I both chose silk handkerchiefs for our mothers.
We folded them and tied them in a certain way, so as to create a pattern on the cloth when the dye soaks in. Then we put on gloves, and soaked our chosen cloth. After five minutes of squeezing and soaking the cloth, we pulled it out and rinsed it in water, before dunking it into a solution which makes the dye set permanently. Five minutes later, they were rinsed, and put into a mini-washing machine. When the spin-dry function was completed, we ironed them, and put them into a bag to take home. Luckily, the patterns we chose worked out perfectly! So did Yuko's, who had done this before, of course.
Anyway, we now had traditional, Japanese hand-made cloths to present to our mothers at Christmas that year! Mandy's cloth was marigold, and mine was Indigo/blue. The pattern on both our cloths was like rays of the sun emanating from one corner of the silk handkerchief! We thought that this was rather appropriate considering that they were made in the land of the rising sun.
Well, all this driving in the mountains and dyeing cloth had made us hungry, and Yuko next drove us to a little pine cottage restaurant. It was so quaint, and we sat there amidst the scent of sandalwood and pine, drinking our delicious coffee, while eating Japanese style pancakes and fresh cream! We had hand-made vanilla ice cream for dessert. I joked that I had dyed and gone to heaven! (Yuko and my wife groaned in unison).
Before long, it was time to head back to the town of Kuwana and arrange some flowers! Being a regular guy from Australia, I never thought I would try arranging flowers, but in Japan, it's not so much about arranging flowers, as it is about learning to relax and to express oneself, much in the same way as writing poetry, or painting. In fact, Yuko kindly explained, it was the samurai who sometimes did this activity to relax after a battle, and knowing that helped me deal with any doubts I had about my masculinity!
We drove back into the city of Kuwana, in Mie, where Yuko's Ikebana Sensei lived, and on the way, Yuko told us briefly about the history of Japanese flower arrangement.
Apparently, flower arrangement really took off in the 15th and 16th centuries, with rigid rules applying to the original form of "Tatebana" (Standing Flower). This custom took place mainly in the temples, and the houses of the nobles and powerful warlords.
Impressive to look at, it was intended not only to please one's senses or display the skill of the arranger but also to make a spiritual impact on the beholder by recreating a scene that was true to nature. Fewer flowers were used than might be expected, and balance was essential, but unnatural symmetry was to be avoided, (such as in bonsai trees).
For many hundreds of years, until the 19th century, flower arranging was a masculine art - practiced by Shinto priests, Buddhist monks, nobles and warriors. Now, of course, with modern society placing its particular demands on people, it has become a mainly a female pastime. A typical flower arrangement today will sit in the "tokonoma" (a special, central, highly visible alcove in a house, where an object is placed as a tribute to somebody or something). It also helps to create a favorable atmosphere for a tea ceremony, and is also sometimes used as decoration in a hotel lobby or foyer.
Yuko's ‘Ikebana' sensei was very relieved and pleased that we could speak Japanese. She was a very traditional kind of Japanese lady, who spoke no English. We quickly got underway. She explained to us about how the human element, the theme or human expression, is more important than the technique or rules of Flower Arrangement; technique comes later, she told us, when it comes time to modify and perfect one's creations further. She, however, took care of this for us.
My particular arrangement consisted of having two foreign flowers (common Australian lillies), in between two Japanese flowers, with pampas grass reeds on either side, around which were spread Japanese Autumn flowers. My theme was ‘Mandy and I' (the two Australian lilies) in the middle of Japan (the Japanese flowers), looking back on all the experiences (the Autumn Flowers) we've had here. Sensei seemed to appreciate that very much, and saw the pampas grass as a nice ‘frame'. Mandy's didn't have a theme so much as an image. Hers was a more European style of a clustered arrangement, which then Sensei picked apart, rearranged and perfected, destroying poor Mandy's original idea in the process! Mandy could see Sensei's point though, and in all fairness, it did look better.
However, Sensei was really interested in seeing what ideas and styles two foreign visitors could come up with, after seeing only Japanese students for so many years. I think she enjoyed it as much as we did, and she was very kind with her time and assistance. Yuko's was a more typical, Japanese style arrangement, leaning over to one side and looking very Asian/Oriental in style. Mandy and I had a very good time, took many photos, and were pleased to have finally experienced the ancient art of Japan's ‘Ikebana'.
A year has passed since then, and now it's summer again. My wife and I live in the mountains, next to a river, so we will do the usual things, such as swimming, fishing, enjoying barbecues with friends and so on. We have already started to observe some of the usual seasonal customs. Last night we walked outside and admired all the fireflies floating effortlessly in the hot, humid air, and chatted about them with some neighbors.
Other customs are also coming to light now that summer is here, such as baseball. In August, my wife and I plan to go to Tokyo Dome with some good Japanese friends and watch the Tokyo Giants (my favorite team) battle it out against Osaka's Hanshin Tigers (my wife's favorite team). It will be the highlight of our summer vacation this year.
We had to laugh when we arrived home today. There was a message in our letterbox from the local council, asking people to dispose of their "summer religious ceremony" garbage in the right way. Apparently, people here put four sticks into an eggplant, so that it resembles a cow, (Matsusaka is one of those places in Japan famous for its cows and beef), and then they place this in their home's Buddhist altar, after which they throw it away, but it has to be put in the correct recycled garbage bags. Sadly, people sometimes just throw it in the nearby river so they don't have to go to the hassle of disposing it properly. Maybe the local council should say to those people, "Don't have a cow, man!"
Yes sir, life is certainly different in this part of the world, but it's never boring! Even the television programs are more interesting, with all the summer sports and extra movies. The commercials recently are featuring more beer ads, now that it's so hot again. But when they advertise beer here, they magnify the sound of the "gulps", and the man drinks it down as if it were cool water and he had just crawled in from the desert dying of thirst! It's got to be down in 5 seconds or else! You wonder if he actually got to taste it.
Summer in Japan is always lively and entertaining, and all its associated customs are fascinating. Each and every year, my wife and I find something new and interesting to experience and enjoy, and I'm sure this summer will be no different.
