Can my Dad go to swim while wearing an urostomy bag?
Hello everyone, my Dad got prostate cancer 5 year ago. He had prostate cut 4 year ago and the bladder removed recently. Now he is using urostomy bags. With these bags, the urinary comes straight from the hole on the belly to the bag through a tube. His desperate dream now is coming back to swim as before (the surgery). Is it possible? If yes, how can he do that (with any equipment/product's support)? The problem is the water may come inside the hole on the belly. Please help. Any advice is much appreaciated. Thank you.
I'm currently on a temporary ostomy after having surgery for cancer. I dive for a living. Still do. The only downtime I had was recovery from the surgery and the only downtime I expect is when the ostomy is reversed. If a diver can can go get wet, there's no reason to expect your dad can't go for a swim. He can shower with his appliance on and it's no different with a swim.
This link is currently down at the moment http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/medical/faq/ but there is a section there written by a Doctor who specializes in dive medicine that explains that there's no reason to worry about any ostomy and getting wet. They must be doing some maintenance on that site, it's always up as a rule.
Edit: Odd, it's still down. Give them a day.
