hey im 17 and im going to Ipanema beach staying at the Fasano rio. My question is can i wear american swim shorts at the beach or is it normal if i wear the famous boxer swim trunks (speedo)? What do the young crowd wear at the beach in Rio?

Basically, you can choose whatever YOU prefer. If I were you, I'd bring my favorite board shorts to Brazil and then buy a sunga after I arrive. There are many vendors selling sungas near (or on) Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. By the way, these two beaches are within walking distance of each other. The water on Ipanema Beach is ocean (vs. bay) and the water is cleaner. But, there are crowds on both.
Many guys (15 - 18 years old) wear board shorts. They are referred to as "bermudas" in Brazil. Many of these guys are the ones who are surfing. Because you are 17, I'd NOT worry about wearing board shorts if a sunga make you nervous. But, if you arrive to Rio (and like the sungas), go for it. Again, wait until you arrive before you buy anything. You might as well take home a cool souvenir from Rio. And, you'll be sure to buy something that is in style. Sungas ARE different than regular speedos that you find in the USA.
Finally, whichever you choose, your tan line will reflect that choice. And, you can always wear your sunga UNDER your board shorts. If you feel the urge to go "sunga" - you're ready.
Other things - don't take much to the beach. Most people bring the bare essentials and nothing more. Don't be a tourist and bring everything you can think of. Also, if you are in shape, you'll be in good company on the Rio beaches. Most of the Brazilians on the beach are in shape.
