As a native of the islands, I have always appreciated the saying “there is no place like home”. Home in the Turks and Caicos Islands is not always the best, we have our country issues like any other place, but I have learned to appreciate the things that make us a unique island in our own right. Sometimes, I have to give myself a rain check and pretend to be a tourist so that I could enjoy the island for what it is and forget about the minor things that irritate me from day to day. Sometimes living on a small island can have its disadvantages, but I have learned to live life from a positive approach.
Doing new things on the islands is like an ongoing new year’s resolution. To list a few, I have experience:
Island hopping: I have given priority to visiting all of the islands in the Turks and Caicos chain. I have already visited Grand Turk, North Caicos, South Caicos, Middle Caicos, Parrot Cay, West Caicos, and of course I reside on Providenciales. This was achieved by traveling by our local plane and via boat. Most of the islands are only a 15 minute ride apart;
Historical sites: as I am always over excited about nature, the plantation ruins of Cheshire Hall in Providenciales, and Wades Green plantation of North Caicos was a good history lesson for me. Also, the Caves in Middle Caicos and Salt ponds in Grand Turk how could I ever forget them;
Little Water Cay: yes I have visited our unique rock iguanas of Little Water Cay;
Beaching: The local community take pride in our pristine white sandy beaches and picnics on holidays and special occasions is common on the Long Bay Beach, Grace Bay, Taylor Bay and Cooper Jack bay;
Cultural market: From time to time I stop in and see what island souvenirs they have available and purchase little trinkets as birthday gifts and presents for relatives;
Restaurants: Going out to dinner and enjoying the delicious cuisine is something that I like to do but do not do it as often as I would like; and
Condo/hotel: Booked a condo for the night along the Grace Bay stretch and experience their amenities and services as well as found time to experience the water parks and buffet restaurants of Beach Turks and Caicos our beloved family destination spot in the island, who is also famous for their Sesame Street Characters.
And now I am yet to explore the Coral Reefs of Turks and Caicos which is one of the longest in the world, swim with Jo Jo the dolphin, Cruise at night to see the beautiful Glow worms after the full moon, take a tour in the underwater submarine, go on a deep sea fishing excursion with one of the dive operators like Provo Sand and Sea Tours, kayak, parasailing or kite boarding and the likes.
Besides these things what I most like about the island living is the community relationship that we as a people have. For instance, going to our local store IGA is always a way of catching up with friends who I have not seen during the week, because the community is small it is inevitable that you will see a few people there who you can catch up with. Or the support that you receive during a funeral, you will have people come from the various islands in the Turks and Caicos to share their condolences in your time of loss. As a community it’s these small efforts that matter most.
There is no Burger King or those large fast food franchise we just have our local sweet tees’ or Chicken Chicken and our many local restaurants in the various locations with delicious island foods like the freshly made conch salad at the Conch Shack or Horse Eye Jack. Again, these unique things are what I love most about living here in TCI.
On another note, just to give you a little idea about our real estate living. Most of the local population have their own homes or would rent an apartment, while more vacationers occupies the condo developments as many are purchased by investors who come to our shores. These condos are put in a rental pool and used as hotel rooms for visiting guests. There is no restriction as to who can purchase real estate in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and there are no property taxes at this time. Obviously, prices vary depending on which area you are purchasing in and which Island. We have a number of real estate agents on the islands who are apart of our local real estate association TCREA, including myself who have access to all inventory on the market that can assist you with further details of real estate. It is real estate that occupies my week on island and what makes it easy for me to take time off and explore this beautiful by nature island that I live on.
There are so many wonderful facts and memories that I can share about my island the Turks and Caicos, however, for now this is life in the Turks and Caicos as I have lived it in a nut shell.

Edvard Grieg's 'Lyric Pieces' are like little vacations, breaths of northern air that seem forever fresh and immediate. From the quicksilvery "Butterfly" or the torch-carrying "Melody" to the joyous gushing of "Wedding Day at Troldhagen," these folk-influenced miniatures have long delighted players and listeners; but only a few great pianists, most notably Walter Gieseking and Emil Gilels, have taken up their cause in earnest. Now Mikhail Pletnev joins their ranks with a well-selected baker's dozen, in which he reveals considerable charm alongside the technical brilliance and cool control for which he is so well known. That command is put to further good use in the early Piano Sonata Op. 7 as well as the rarely-heard Seven Fugues of Grieg's student years, among the few unpublished works of his which were not destroyed or suppressed: they would make excellent material for a game of "Hey smart guy, who wrote this?".
Herbie Mann's Peace Pieces may surprise some listeners who think that the flutist has long forgotten his jazz roots. Mann has always considered the late pianist Bill Evans to be one of his favorite musicians and he actually recorded an album with him (1961's Nirvana). For his Kokopelli release, Mann performs eight songs composed by Evans and one ("Blue in Green") that the pianist claimed Miles Davis permanently "borrowed" from him. Mann wisely did not utilize a piano (thereby avoiding any comparisons) and his thoughtful set has more variety than one might expect. Randy Brecker has a couple of guest spots on flugelhorn, Mann overdubbed additional flutes on a few numbers (forming a section behind his solo playing) and he used an excellent and quiet rhythm section comprised of guitarist Bruce Dunlap, bassist Eddie Gomez, drummer Louis Nash, and sometimes percussionist Sammy Figueroa. A few of the pieces are heated while others are quite introspective but all of the music is both thoughtful and swinging. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Randy Brecker - Flugelhorn; Bruce Dunlap - Guitar; Eddie Gomez - Bass; Herbie Mann - Flute; Louis Nash - Drums; Paul Socolow - Bass; Ricky Sebastian - Drums; Sammy Figueroa - Percussion

Mike Mainieri's work as a leader or alongside his friends in Steps Ahead has never vaulted him to the top of the critics' polls, despite the fact that he is unquestionably a gifted vibraphonist and staunchly confident contemporary figurehead in the fusion-to-neo-bop movement. Perhaps this recording, with the equally talented guitarist Marnix Busstra, will allow both musicians the due they deserve. This is a finely crafted effort featuring all original compositions that expand the color palate of the principal's instruments while keeping volume levels out of the rock & roll range. There's taste and invention, colors and shadings, along with a good diversity when Mainieri plays minimalist-type rhythms or Busstra picks up a sitar or bouzouki. Acoustic double bassist Eric Van Der Westen and drummer Pieter Bast -- like Busstra -- are from the Netherlands where this band toured extensively, inspiring Mainieri to evolve his sound post-Seventh Avenue South/mean N.Y.C. streets, and away from rhythm & blues. At times, Busstra has the unmistakable influence of John Scofield shining through, as evident on the low, slow, lazy New Orleans rolled blues "Old Men's Home," the tick-tock beat in varying pacings and accents during the 12-tone-based "All In a Row," or the funky overdubbed "Don't Break Step." Then again, a distinct Eastern Indian feel creeps up within a tango saunter for the pretty and twangy "Old Fashion," or the resonant "Lost in Little Spain," with vibes and guitar unison lines with backdrop sitar leading to a modal vamp and uncharacteristic sky church guitar à la Jimi Hendrix. "The Same New Story" is also based on the lustful Argentinean tango beat, but more in a light acoustic guitar-framed stance. The lush "Piece" has the underlying rush work of Bast buoying subtle melodies and the insistent bass of Van Der Westen, while "Square Brown" recalls Larry Coryell's strumming and singing guitars in brotherhood. There's a ballad of finality in "It's Done," a spare, free, atmospheric "Where Am I?," the adapted Indian vocal children's song "Kannada," and Mainieri doing a solo vibes snippet ""Mike's 'Piece"'" in the middle of the ensemble segments. Mainieri himself is completely supportive of Busstra, and is happily a big and democratic part of this cohesive team. This is an excellent example of modern contemporary jazz music beholden to no vintage traditions, making its way on its own merits, which display a high degree of quality. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi Performers: Marnix Busstra - Sitar (Electric), Bouzouki, Guitar; Eric Van Der Westen - Double Bass; Mike Mainieri - Vibraphone; Mike Manieri - Vibraphone;
