Captain Video - Master Of The Stratosphere

Captain Video - Master Of The Stratosphere

$16.99

VCI has done pop-culture mavens and television buffs a real service with the release of the Captain Video serial -- for the rest of us, this reviewer isn't so sure. Long regarded as lost, and so obscure that many serial buffs had forgotten it existed, Captain Video was the first chapter-play to be adapted from a television source, and among the earlier American film properties to spun out from a small-screen source (although, technically speaking, Laurence Olivier's 1944 Henry V, no less, probably has the distinction of being the first theatrical motion picture property to have started life as a television project). So there's some popular culture significance here, and also some moments of cleverness, such as the use of tinting in the extra-terrestrial sequences to add some variety to the obviously low-budget goings on up on the screen. There are a few missing frames here and there, and also, on a wholly different level, moments where the resolution of the DVD format is so good that the cheapness of the overall production shows through on the full-screen (1.33-to-1) image in ways that it wouldn't have so obviously in 1951 (even on a screen 50 feet across). But generally VCI has done a nice job with this double-disc set, within the limitations of the original production. Each of the 15 chapters gets a marker of its own on the two platters, and the second disc has some decent supplementary materials, including biographies of principal cast members and the two directors, Wallace Grissel and Spencer Gordon Bennet, and an array of trailers from thematically related releases by the company. As to the chapterplay itself, it's pretty wretched as entertainment -- in adapting the television series (which was broadcast live, and has left behind only a handful of kinescopes), they were working with a bigger budget but not one that allowed for decent special effects, props, or costumes; and the acting is often horrendous, making the performances in, say, Republic's serials of the same period look brilliant and thoughtful by comparison. What the serial does have in its favor is a lot of energy and forward momentum, which at least makes it exciting in a primitive way, if one doesn't spend too much time thinking about what's on the screen. And in case one does, there are some interesting topical notions contained in the script -- part of the principal villain's activities involves sponsoring wars of liberation as a pre-text for planetary takeovers, which is a fairly complex idea for a property like this, and applies anti-Communist principals to the plotting of space-fantasy; it might not be the work of Robert Heinlein or Arthur C. Clarke (or even their gardeners), but it's pretty sophisticated for an adaptation of a kids' sci-fi show of the period. It's fun in its primitive way -- though not nearly as enjoyable as, say, the Superman or Atom Man Vs. Superman serials, made at the same studio somewhat earlier and directed by Bennet, are. Still, the Captain Vid

The Golden Ring [DVD Video]

The Golden Ring [DVD Video]

$25.47

The classic BBC documentary on Decca's gargantuan first studio recording of Der Ring des Nibelungen was first broadcast in 1965, just after the company completed the project with Götterdämmerung in 1964, and the bulk of the film is devoted to the final days of the recording sessions. One thing that sets it apart from the tone of many documentary films made in the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries is the complete lack of hyped-up drama. This is simply the story of a large team of remarkably capable performers and engineers united in a generous, mutually respectful, professional collaboration on a grand project. Decca producer John Culshaw and conductor Georg Solti emerge as heroes of Wagnerian stature (but with considerably more dignity, integrity, and good humor than Wagner's). In one remarkable exchange, after a spirited debate, Solti agrees to a major tempo change that Culshaw insists is critical to the larger dramatic arc of the music. Directed by Humphrey Burton, the film captures the diverse elements that went into such a colossal undertaking -- the complex logistics and coordination of schedules for the many participants (Don't forget that in this scene we need to bring in the six harps.), the musical preparations and rehearsals, the configuration of special effects such as screaming and the use of tuned steer horns (that had to be designed and built for the recording since the only existing set disappeared during the War), the elaborate choreography required of the singers as they moved around the stage, the precise technical preparations that consumed the recording engineers, the tense editing sessions where the tape was cut and spliced, and the parties that provided relief from the stress of the work. For listeners familiar with Decca's sound recording of Götterdämmerung, it's especially intriguing to see how the singers come across visually and dramatically. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there are few surprises. Wolfgang Windgassen is stiff and undramatic, his nose usually buried in the score. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's smoldering intelligence is evident in everything he says and sings. Birgit Nilsson is intensely focused and effortlessly dramatic, her face frequently transfigured by the music, but her giggly girlishness is unexpected. Gottlob Frick is a darkly menacing, iconic embodiment of Hagen. The film should be of interest to any fan of the Ring, or anyone intrigued by what was probably the most ambitious and intricately involved opera recording project of the twentieth century. The DVD also includes about an hour of music -- basically the operas' greatest hits -- from Solti's Ring, in Dolby Digital Surround Sound. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

How to Use Video with Your Apple iPod

The new video capable iPod has opened a new world of possibilities for people upgrading to the newest iPod model. However, for the most part, most do not know how to encode video to portable devices that require strict format requirements. For those who own a PSP, you might know a thing or two about encoding video. The PSP and iPod can only play MPEG-4 encoded videos with AAC audio tracks. There are limits to resolution and bit rates of the videos you can use on your iPod. It may seem that this video iPod thing is too complicated for a "normal" person to figure out, but here are some simple instructions on how to create video for your new video iPod:

If you have QuickTime Pro 7, you can make your own videos that will allow you to play them on your iPod. With QuickTime, you can easily convert your home videos or any other video into a format that your iPod will recognize. First, make sure that you are, in fact, running the newest version of QuickTime, 7 or later. After you have the latest version of QuickTime installed, go ahead and open it. Now, go ahead and choose the "Open File" option from the File menu at the top left corner of the QuickTime window. Select the video or movie that you would like to play on your iPod and then click on the Open button. Now choose the "Export" option from the File menu. You should see an option that says, "Movie to iPod (320x240)", click on the Save button. Now the Export progress bar will show you how far the export process has gone before being completed.

However, if your movie is longer, then it will take more time than if you had a shorter movie. Once the export has been completed, QuickTime Pro will put the new version of your movie on your desktop. This is the version that will be able to play on your video iPod. Go ahead and open up this new version of your movie and play it to make sure it looks the way it is supposed to. To get the video to your iPod, you will have to launch iTunes version 6. If you do not have iTunes 6, you should download it at this time. Now drag the new movie file into your iTunes library. Put it into a folder or a playlist of your choice. Connect your iPod to your computer and synchronize it with your iTunes. Now if you would like to play the movie, select the "Videos" and then the "Movies" option from your video iPod's Main Menu. All available movies will be listed in alphabetical order. Go ahead and select the desired movie to play.

But what do you do if you want to watch episodes of your favorite television show from your iPod, on your TV? Don't worry; here are some quick and easy steps for you to be watching them in no time:

First, you will need some items, a video-capable iPod, and iPod-compatible video (like the one you just converted in QuickTime), an AV cable (these can be bought off eBay if you do not have one for only five or six bucks). Now you can configure your iPod video options that will allow you to control how you export video. On the iPod Video Options screen, you can select how your video iPod will handle the video file playback. In order to open these settings, first choose Videos then Video Settings on your main iPod menu. This screen will offer three different settings: TV Out, TV Signal and Widescreen. Adjust these setting to pick the video playback style that you need. Whenever your iPod plays a video file, it will either play the video on the built-in screen or it will transmit the video signal out of the microphone jack. To control which one your iPod does, go to the TV Out option. If you choose No, the playback will remain on the iPod. If you select, "Yes" then a TV signal is produced. If you would like the iPod to ask you every time it plays a video file, select the Ask option.

Now that you know how to convert video files on your computer into iPod compatible video, and you know how to get movies or video on your iPod to play on your television set, you should be set to go with your new video iPod.
