Nice story (sort of) , when I saw the picture of the swimming goggles, I wasn't to sure where the story was going ! Must go my egg sandwich awaits me.
Ian Hayward
The Internet is an unregulated environment and as such should be considered an Adult Environment which is wholly unsuitable for educational classrooms.
Filters do not work, they are 80% effective, to refer to a “protection” system that has a 20% chance of failing to prevent my children from seeing hard core porn and child abuse images is unacceptable.
The Internet industry widely recognises that filters “don’t work” if you define “working” as preventing kids form seeing hard core porn on the net.
Let me re-frame this for teachers from a realistic point of view… Think of it like this…How would the papers react if you were to stock a section of your school library with hard core American/Euro porn magazines (even this material would be tame compared to the bestiality and child abuse sites on the net) and then teach kids in your school how not to access those sections of the library while writing to parents to ask them to sign a “library use policy” to agree that they will help teach kids not to access the “porn” section of the school library.
Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it?
Well that is how ridiculous you sound to me when you talk of “tools” and “supervision” in the classroom using the Internet.
It’s a national disgrace that commercial objectives like the cost of issuing photocopied documents paper and buying books should come before the down sides of telling kids to access information from the Internet. CD’s and safe walled garden networked environments yes but NOT the Internet and NOT search engines.
I’m the CEO of a company working closely with global technology firms and I’m also closely working on EU projects and organisations regarding dangers to children online.
I’ve been in a top level meeting with IT head of a major UK leading IT education authority who has openly admitted that they do not want to raise awareness to the dangers exposed to their boroughs children everyday because the papers would have a field day as they can not do anything about it because filters do not work and the Internet is too open.
I’ve also spoken to teachers who have told me that “older” children leave hardcore porn on computer screens to embarrass the teachers and the younger children in the school.
So don’t talk to me about swimming goggles policy.
The Internet is not an educational tool, there’s no publishing system there’s not even a guarantee that the information found online is even accurate, plagiarism is rife.
The Internet is an unregulated Adult environment and unsuitable and unnecessary addition to the classroom. I challenge anybody to enter into a debate with me on this subject and win because for every positive aspect you table I shall reply, “but you can’t guarantee the child won’t see hard core porn with the next click, and you can guarantee they won’t find hard core porn in the library and just stick to using books”
I want to see teachers stand up and “tell the emperor that he indeed has no clothes on”, teachers should teach they should not have to stand guard over teaching materials in case they manifest in to something damaging to the child. Governments should either provide a “closed system” of networked information that the child can access to support their learning, or alternatively, just stick to books.
The Internet bubble hasn’t burst yet for schools like it did for wall street in 1999.
